Product Description
The Beaufort became the RAAF aircraft of choice for its Bomber requirement in 1938, and became the basis for the largest production order up to that time in Australia, with aircraft slated not only for the RAAF, but also as a source for the RAF.
The design was slightly modified, with different wheel wells and engines, and the first 50 were designated as the Mk V. These had P&W R-1830 Twin Wasp engines with 2 speed superchargers. The next version, the Mk VI, was identical except that the engines were only fitted with single speed superchargers. The Mk VII variant, used the same engines as the Mk VI, but with 12’ Hamilton Standard propellers, ASVII radar and under nose turret. Vickers K guns were added in gimble mounts in the nose. The final version was the Mk VIII with Hydromatic propellors, plus two turret variations.
To fill a need for transports, 46 Beauforts were converted by removing the combat equipment and adding a turtle deck from the rear turret position to the fin. The type saw extensive use in 1944-45 with various communications units and for a short while in the post war. This covered the serial range A9-701 to A9-746.
