The aircraft was lightened by removing the military equipment, the wing tips clipped, canopy modified and a large number of performance enhancements made. The aircraft first flew as “Conquest 1”, winning the National Air Races six times and in 1969 broke the World Speed Record for piston engined aircraft - a record last set 40 years before by the Messerschmitt Bf 209.
“Conquest 1” was repainted in a striking yellow scheme as “American Jet” and in 1977, Greenamyer donated the aircraft to the Smithsonian Museum where it remains on display. A review of this kit can be seen at the IPMS Air Racing SIG page
